“When it’s obvious and exciting to everyone, it’s too late. Crowd psychology is always wrong at crucial market turning points, when it’s most important to be right.”

Agreement is the slowest thing in the market. By the time an idea is obvious enough that everyone
can explain it, everyone who was going to act on it already has — and that, not the story, is what
has set the price.
Core Principle
Consensus is assembled out of evidence, and evidence is a record of what already happened, so
agreement is structurally late. The sharper part is what unanimity says about positioning rather
than about the future. If a story is obvious and exciting to everyone, then everyone it was going to
persuade has acted on it, and the demand that story could generate is spent. Price is set at the
margin, by whoever comes next — and broad agreement means there is nobody left to convince. That is
why conviction runs highest exactly where it costs the most.
Trading Application
The practical version is not contrarianism for its own sake; being early against a crowd is its own
way of being wrong. It is to treat the emotional temperature around an idea as information about how
much of it is already in the price. When you cannot find anyone who disagrees with you, ask who is
left to buy. The takeaway: excitement tells you what has already been paid for, not what is coming
next.
