“The problem about setting price targets is that the best stocks usually end up going a lot further than anyone expects.”
(David Ryan)
KOLの視点KOL Take
A target is a forecast I make at the moment I know least about the trade, and it only ever binds the
trades I got right. I would rather hold an exit that reacts to the stock than one that argues with
it.
Core Principle
A target is a forecast made before the position has done anything at all, which is the moment you
know least. It also lands asymmetrically: a target never shortens a loss, only a gain, so it
disciplines the one side of your record that did not need disciplining. Ryan’s objection is
practical rather than philosophical. A small number of trades carry a year’s results, and those
trades are by definition the ones that went further than anybody thought reasonable. Cap them at a
number you chose in advance and you have removed the outcome you were relying on.
Trading Application
This is not an argument for having no exit; it is an argument about what governs one. An exit tied
to the stock’s own behavior can be wrong and still adapt, while an exit tied to a forecast can only
be right or expired. So define the condition that would say the move is finished, and let that
condition decide when you are done. The takeaway: a price target retires a trade on schedule, and
the trades worth having do not keep to one.
