“Watch out for “tick syndrome,” which I define as a situation that can occur whenever you find yourself stopped out of the same trade twice or more.”
(Gil Morales)
KOLの視点KOL Take
I treat one stop on an idea as the ordinary cost of trading it. After a second stop on the same trade, I check whether I am still trading the stock or simply refusing to let it go.
Core Principle
Morales named the syndrome after a wood tick that drops onto a rock instead of an animal and keeps digging until it kills itself. The trader’s version is returning to a trade the market keeps punishing. What makes it a risk problem is that every attempt looks controlled: each entry has a stop, each stop is honored, each loss stays within the rules. But a stop limits the trade, not the idea. Three stops on one opinion amount to one position allowed to lose three times its budget, in installments. A run of stops across different setups is a separate question. Stops stacked on one idea are Morales’s concern, and the second one is the moment to ask whether you are flowing with the market or fighting it.
Trading Application
Track stops by idea, not just by trade. Give each idea one loss budget and count every re-entry against it. When the budget is spent, the idea is closed until something material changes, such as a new base, not merely a different price or a stronger feeling. The takeaway: the stop limits each attempt, so something else has to limit how many attempts one idea gets.
