“To be highly accurate in any pursuit, you must carefully observe and analyze the object itself. If you want to know about tigers, watch tigers—not the weather, not the vegetation, not the other animals on the mountain.”
(William J. O’Neil)
KOLの視点KOL Take
Almost everything written about the market is about the market’s surroundings. The averages themselves leave a record every single day, and it is the one item in the whole pile that is not somebody’s opinion.
Core Principle
The surroundings are always easier to consume than the object. Forecasts, the day’s narrative, the reason being offered for a move: all of it reads like context, and context feels like diligence, so the substitution happens without anyone noticing they made it. But the market itself keeps a record of what the major averages did, on what volume, and how they behaved on the days that decided something. That record is available to anyone willing to read it, and it does not depend on anyone’s prediction being correct. O’Neil is not saying surrounding conditions never matter. He is saying accuracy comes from the object, and the mountain is not the tiger.

Take the question you most want answered, what the general market is doing, and answer it using only price and volume in the major averages over recent weeks. Write the answer down. Then read the commentary and check whether it told you anything the record had not. The takeaway: if you cannot describe what the averages have done without quoting somebody, you have been studying the weather.
