“You should have a method that narrows down to a precise set of rules. If a stock meets all the criteria you set down, then you go with it; if not, do nothing.”
(David Ryan)

A criterion that has never disqualified anything is not a rule, it is a description of what I was going to do anyway. The test of a method is whether it can say no while I am still hoping it says yes.
Core Principle
The load-bearing word is precise, and the load-bearing clause is the last one. Most traders have criteria. Far fewer have criteria capable of returning a rejection, because the usual wording — strong chart, good relative strength, improving fundamentals — will accommodate almost anything you were already interested in. A standard that cannot be failed does not make decisions, it explains ones you have made. And since you are looking at the stock at all, what it leaves behind is a maybe, which settles in favour of the position far more often than against it. Ryan’s construction closes that route. Meeting all of it is one outcome and not meeting it is the other, with nothing in between for hope to occupy.
Trading Application
Take each criterion and ask when it last eliminated a candidate you liked. Anything that never has is decorative: attach a number to it, or drop it. A useful check: hand your rules and a chart to someone else and see whether they reach your verdict. If two reasonable people can disagree, it is an opinion in a rule’s clothing. The takeaway: judge a method by what it rejects, not by what it approves.
