“I rarely buy stocks below $15. The better-quality companies are usually higher priced.”
(David Ryan)
KOLの視点KOL Take
The number is not the insight — it stands in for the kind of company serious money has already bid
up. A filter exists to shrink the field before judgment starts, never to do the judging.
Core Principle
Look at how modest the claim is. Ryan does not say cheap stocks cannot work, or that fifteen
dollars is a meaningful line — he says rarely, and usually. The price is standing in for something
else. Institutional buyers concentrate in a particular quality tier, and their demand is part of
what holds a price up there, so a very low one is often a symptom of what kept them away: thin
liquidity, unreliable earnings, repeated dilution. The filter is crude and he knows it. Its
purpose is not to be right about every name it excludes, but to cut thousands of candidates down
to a field small enough for real work.
Trading Application
Ask what each of your filters is a proxy for, then check that the proxy still holds where you
trade. A dollar threshold means something different in Tokyo, Taipei or Hong Kong than in New
York, while the question behind it travels everywhere: has serious money already been here? Keep
such filters loose enough to survive being crude, and spend the time they save on the shortlist.
The takeaway: a filter buys you attention, it cannot spend it for you.
