“My losing trades occur when I’m not disciplined enough to stick to my rules. The emotion comes in, and I buy a stock that is too extended or whose base is not exactly set up the right way.”
(David Ryan)
KOLの視点KOL Take
When I go back through my losers, the damage almost never starts at the loss — it starts a step earlier, at the moment I let emotion talk me past a rule I already knew. The trade was just where it surfaced.
Core Principle
Ryan’s diagnosis is unusually specific. Both of his named failures — chasing something already extended, and accepting a base that is not quite right — are impatience, not ignorance. He knew the rule in each case. That is the uncomfortable part, because it means the problem is not a knowledge gap you can study away. It is a discipline gap that shows up only under a particular pressure: watching something move without you. More research does not close that gap. A process that makes the decision before the pressure arrives does.
Trading Application
When a trade goes wrong, resist reviewing the exit and go back to the first rule that got bent — usually well before the loss appeared. Over a few months that becomes a short, repetitive list, and the repetition is the useful part: it tells you which specific rule your emotions target. The takeaway: audit the decision that let you in, not the one that got you out.
