“A stock should never be sold short just because its price or price/earnings ratio seems “too high.””
(William J. O’Neil)
KOLの視点KOL Take
The costliest opinion I have ever held is that something has gone too far. A high price tells me the
market disagrees with me — never when it intends to change its mind.
Core Principle
Valuation describes a level; the short side requires timing. Nothing obliges an expensive stock to
converge on your estimate of fair, and demand can hold it there — or take it considerably higher —
for longer than a position can be carried. O’Neil’s rule exists because “too high” feels like
analysis while functioning as a statement about your own model rather than an observation about
supply and demand. This error is punished more severely short than long, because a position moving
against you grows: a long can only fall to zero, while a short’s downside stays open-ended. In the
account, early on valuation and simply wrong look identical.

Treat valuation as context, never as the reason to act. Anyone studying the short side needs
observable evidence that supply has taken control of a stock, not a view about what it ought to be
worth, and small enough size that a sharp advance cannot dictate decisions. The takeaway: a price
you personally find unreasonable is not evidence of anything except your own opinion.
