“It takes real knowledge and market know-how as well as lots of courage to sell, and particularly to sell short, because you will make many mistakes.”
(William J. O’Neil)
KOLの視点KOL Take
I treat the short side as its own discipline with its own tuition bill, not as long trading run
backwards. Expecting to be wrong often is not pessimism — it is the only honest basis for sizing the
risk.
Core Principle
O’Neil opens the short side with a warning rather than a promise, and the warning is structural. The
instincts the long side rewards — patience through a drawdown, conviction while a position works
against you — are the ones the short side punishes, because a losing short grows larger as it goes
wrong and has no natural floor to stop the loss. Add that equity indexes have drifted upward over
long stretches, and the short seller is working against the current rather than with it. Expecting
many mistakes is not defeatism. It is the assumption the risk rules have to be built on.
Trading Application
Treat early short-side losses as tuition you budgeted for, not as evidence to press harder. Keep
size small enough that being wrong repeatedly stays survivable, and decide before entry what price
would say the idea has failed. The takeaway: learn this side of the market at a size where mistakes
can teach you something instead of deciding your year.
