“Given the inherent risk and danger of short-selling, it might be considered the stock market equivalent of big-wave surfing.”
(Gil Morales)
KOLの視点KOL Take
Shorting is not buying with the sign flipped. The skill is real and it is learnable, but a mistake on that side has no natural place to stop — which is exactly why the comparison is to big waves and not to a bigger pool.
Core Principle
The analogy is doing careful work. Big-wave surfing is a genuine discipline — technique, judgment, years of both — not recklessness. What Morales names is its second half: the conditions that create the opportunity also set the price of a misjudgment, and that price is not proportional to how wrong you were. A long position shrinks as it goes against you, and the loss has a floor, because a share cannot fall past zero. A short does the reverse — it grows as it moves against you, so exposure increases precisely when the read is worst, and there is no natural ceiling at which the loss stops on its own.

So treat it as its own discipline rather than as buying reversed: what was learned about entries, sizing and patience has to be re-derived, because the arithmetic underneath changed. The honest questions come first — whether the environment supports it at all, what evidence would mean the read is wrong, and whether the size leaves acting on it a choice rather than something forced. The takeaway: the skill is real, and so is the fact that the mistake does not stop by itself.
