“Most commodity traders want to put up the bare minimum. That means they get knocked off the horse all the time because they are not capitalized for this.”
(Larry Williams)

Risk is not a property of what you trade; it is a property of how much you put behind it. Fund a
position thinly enough and perfectly ordinary movement becomes the thing that ends you.
Core Principle
Williams moves risk off the instrument and onto the funding behind it. He is talking about markets
where the leverage is explicit, but the mechanism is general: the same position in two accounts is
not the same trade, because one can absorb an ordinary week and the other cannot. Notice the
frequency in his phrasing — knocked off all the time, not once in a crisis. What ends a thinly
funded position is rarely an extraordinary move. It is routine fluctuation arriving against a
position too large to sit through, and at that point size has taken the exit decision away from you.
Trading Application
So size is not the last detail of a plan; it decides whether the rest of the plan ever gets to run.
Before entry, ask what ordinary movement in this market looks like and whether the position can sit
through that without forcing your hand. If it cannot, the idea was never really tested. The
takeaway: the market does not have to be unusual to remove you — it only has to find you funded for
a version of it that behaves.
