“I think people focus too much on the shorter-term timeframes. That is how I sort of initially learned and think it is a huge trap.”
(Oliver Kell)

A shorter chart doesn’t show me more of the market, it shows me more events — and most of them are
not the trend. I zoom in to place a trade, never to decide whether I believe in it.
Core Principle
Kell is naming where most people start and why it keeps them there. The short timeframe is seductive
because it answers fast — you learn within minutes whether you were right, and that pace feels like
learning. What it actually trains is reaction. Zoom in far enough and every chart produces breaks,
reversals and failures, not because the stock is doing anything meaningful but because that is what
noise looks like at high resolution. The damage starts when the fine detail is allowed to overrule
the larger picture: a five-minute break of support ends a position whose weekly trend never changed.
The shorter chart is not wrong. It is answering a smaller question than the one you are trading.
Resolution and importance are different things.
Trading Application
Decide which timeframe your thesis lives on and let only that one end the trade. Use the shorter
chart for what it is good at — locating a fill, tightening the risk at entry — and deny it any
authority to change your mind about the position. The takeaway: pick the timeframe the trade belongs
to first, and treat anything shorter as execution, not conviction.
