“The amount you risk must be adjusted based on the amount you stand to gain. Therefore, losses are a function of expected gain.”
(Mark Minervini)

The way I set risk now: I work out what the trade can realistically pay before I decide what I’m
willing to lose on it. The stop is downstream of the upside, not a habit I apply to everything.
Core Principle
Most traders pick a risk number once — two percent, a fixed dollar amount — and apply it to every
idea regardless of what the idea offers. Minervini flips the order of operations. The loss you’re
willing to absorb is derived from the gain the setup can reasonably produce, which means the same
stop can be sensible in one trade and indefensible in another. It also ties to your batting average:
the lower your win rate, the larger the multiple each winner has to return before the arithmetic
works at all. A risk figure quoted with no reference to reward is just a number you’re comfortable
with, not a number the trade earned.
Trading Application
Before you commit, mark the level that proves the idea wrong and the level the move could plausibly
reach, then compare the two. If the ratio doesn’t justify the exposure, the honest answer is a
smaller position or none at all — not a wider stop. The takeaway: let the expected reward set the
size of the loss you’re prepared to take, instead of applying one fixed risk to every trade you see.
