“Never sell a stock that’s in Stages 1 or 2 (especially Stage 2).”
(Stan Weinstein)

My rule of thumb here: if the stock is still basing or climbing through its advance, it hasn’t done anything to deserve a sell order yet.
Core Principle
Weinstein’s stages map a stock’s whole life — basing, advancing, topping, declining — and the sell decision belongs to the back half, not the front. A name in Stage 2 is doing exactly what you bought it to do: trending up on healthy participation. Selling it because you’re up a little, or because a headline spooked you, hands the rest of the move to someone else. Most of the gain in a good run shows up in the part impatient holders never see, because they exited while the trend was still intact.
Trading Application
Let stage, not your P&L, govern the exit: as long as price holds above a rising long-term average and the structure is intact, the burden of proof is on selling. The takeaway: wait for the trend to actually deteriorate before you leave — don’t talk yourself out of a healthy advance.
