A stop gets hit in two very different ways, and the fill looks identical. The stock can do something that genuinely changes its character, or it can do nothing unusual and merely wander through a level you placed inside its ordinary range of movement. Both close the position; only one is a verdict. That is why Kell points at a moving average the stock had been holding rather than a number of his own choosing. Such a level has the stock’s own behavior behind it, so losing it means the stock is acting differently. The consequence shows up afterwards. A stop-out that means the setup failed leaves you something to study; one that means it wiggled teaches nothing, and quietly trains you to widen the next one.

When you are stopped out, record which of the two it was: did the stock’s behavior change, or did it just move? If you are repeatedly stopped out of names that then go on to work, the level was not wrong about the stock, it was sitting inside the noise. The takeaway: a stop belongs outside the stock’s ordinary movement but at the point where its behavior would actually change.
