何かをもう保有したくないと判断するのは、それを空売りしようと判断するよりも、はるかにハードルが低い。前者は「保有を続ける理由が消えた」というだけで十分だが、後者はゼロから組み立てる必要があり、しかもその損失には天井がない。
Deciding I no longer want to own something is a much lower bar than deciding to bet against it. The
first only needs my reason for holding to be gone; the second has to be built from scratch, and it
carries a loss with no ceiling on it.

The sale asks one question: is my reason for owning this still intact? A no settles it. The short
asks a much harder one — will this fall far enough, fast enough, and soon enough to pay for the risk
of being short at all? Plenty of stocks are good sales and poor shorts. They stall, drift sideways
for months, ease down gently. Nothing there is wrong for the seller, and nothing there pays the
short. The asymmetry decides the rest. A long has a floor: the worst case is bounded, and the
position shrinks as it fails. A short has no natural ceiling on the loss, and it grows against you
as it goes wrong, so the mistake compounds itself.

買いポジションは、それ自体の妥当性だけで手仕舞いし、そこで話を終える。空売りの根拠に興味を引かれたなら、ゼロから組み立て直し、手仕舞いの際には不要だった水準の証拠を求めること——そして、損失に限度がないつもりでサイズを決めること。実際、限度はないのだから。要点:「保有する価値がない」ことと「賭けるだけの価値がある」ことは、別の判定であり、売却が決着をつけるのは前者だけだ。
Close the long on its own merits and stop there. If a short case interests you, build it from
nothing and require evidence the exit never needed — and size it as though the loss has no floor,
because it doesn’t. The takeaway: not worth owning and worth betting against are two different
verdicts, and selling only settles the first.
