“Essentially, if the reason for buying is no longer present I am exiting the position.”
(Oliver Kell)
KOLの視点KOL Take
Every position I hold is the answer to a question I asked before I bought it. When the question stops applying, staying in is not patience — it is a decision I never actually made.
Core Principle
Most exit rules are levels: a stop, an average, a percentage. Kell’s is a condition. Whatever made the trade worth taking either still describes the stock or it does not, and it can fail while price sits nowhere near any level you set. This is the gap that catches capable traders: the position that goes quiet rather than wrong. It has not fallen far enough to trigger anything, yet it no longer resembles what you bought, so it sits there consuming capital on the authority of an old decision. A price stop protects you from a fast loss. A thesis check protects you from a slow one. It also requires that the reason was written down: a premise you never made explicit is one you cannot notice leaving.
Trading Application
At entry, write one sentence naming what has to stay true for the position to survive. Review that sentence on the same schedule you review price, and treat its failure as sufficient on its own — no further decline required. The takeaway: an exit does not have to be triggered by a loss. Once the reason is gone the trade is already finished, and selling only records it.
