“It was evident that I had bought the right stock at the wrong time.”
(Nicolas Darvas)
KOLの視点KOL Take
Being right about the company and being right about the moment are two separate pieces of work, and the market only pays when you have done both. I have owned plenty of genuinely good businesses that cost me money purely because I turned up early.
Core Principle
Darvas’s sentence is the sound of two decisions coming apart. Research answers which stock is worth owning; it says nothing about when to own it. The second question has its own evidence and its own answer, and no amount of work on the first supplies it. What makes this expensive is that a correct thesis makes a losing position feel like a misunderstanding rather than a mistake. The company really is good. The story really does hold. So the trader waits for the market to catch up to research that was never about timing, and the loss keeps growing inside an argument that stays true the whole way down.
Trading Application
Keep the two decisions in separate places: a list of what you would be willing to own, and a separate condition that says the moment has arrived. Nothing crosses from the first to the second on conviction alone. And a right-stock-wrong-time position gets the same exit as every other position you hold — being right eventually does not fund the drawdown now. The takeaway: selection and timing are two answers, and the market grades them separately.
