“You must learn that the market is a discounting mechanism, and that stocks sell on future and not current fundamentals.”

The most confusing thing a new trader sees is a great earnings report and a stock that falls on it. Price isn’t grading the quarter you just read — it’s already trading the one you haven’t.
Core Principle
This explains the thing that most frustrates careful analysts: a company reports well and the stock falls anyway. By the time a good quarter is published, everyone positioned to anticipate it already has. Price moves on expectation; the report is confirmation, and confirmation is the most expensive thing you can buy. It is also why leadership frequently turns up while the headlines are still bad, and why a stock can top out while its fundamentals are still improving. Current fundamentals tell you where a business has been. Price is a continuously updated vote on where the market thinks it is going.
Trading Application
When the news and the tape disagree, treat the tape as the more current piece of information and ask what it might be anticipating that the numbers do not yet show. The takeaway: use fundamentals to understand the business, and let price and the stage it is in tell you what the market has already priced in.
