“I wait for the stock to break out of a sideways movement. If you buy when the stock is still in a base, you run the risk that the stock will actually break to the downside.”
(David Ryan)

How I think about it now: buying inside a base isn’t getting in early, it’s owning an unresolved
outcome. Waiting for the range to settle costs a little price and removes an entire category of risk.
Core Principle
A base is, by definition, a stretch where the market hasn’t decided. Supply and demand are still
arguing, and the shape on the chart tells you the argument is happening — not who wins. Buying into
it feels efficient, because the price is lower and the eventual move looks obvious in hindsight. In
real time you are simply holding a coin that hasn’t landed, and a meaningful share of bases resolve
downward. Ryan’s discipline is to let the market answer first. The cost is a worse price; what it
buys is the removal of the case where the range breaks the wrong way while you are already committed.
Trading Application
Decide in advance what counts as resolution for you — price clearing the range with a genuine
expansion in volume — and treat everything before that as a watch item rather than a position.
Accept the higher entry as the price of not owning an unfinished argument. The takeaway: paying up
for a decided outcome is usually cheaper than paying less for an undecided one.
