“Amateur investors treat their gains like the market’s money instead of their money, and in due time the market takes it back.”
(Mark Minervini)

The moment a gain shows up on my screen it is mine, not a loan from the market. Calling it house money is just permission to hold it more loosely than I would ever hold cash.
Core Principle
The error Minervini names is an accounting one. Money in an account is fungible: an open gain of twenty percent is exactly as real as the capital that produced it. But the label changes how it gets handled. Nobody watches a cash balance drain away and calls it giving the position room to breathe. Relabel that same money as the market’s and it is no longer quite yours to protect, so it rides on a longer leash, behind a stop that never moves up. Notice his phrasing: in due time. That is not punishment for a bad pick; it is arithmetic. The one position nobody is managing is the one the market eventually manages.

So relabel in the other direction. Read the position’s current value as what it is — cash you own, sitting in one stock at today’s price — then ask whether you would put that whole amount into this name, here, now. If not, it is being held for where it came from rather than what it is. The takeaway: a gain becomes your money the moment it appears, and treating it as anything else is how it gets returned.
