“Never hold a stock that is in a downtrend no matter how low the price/earnings ratio.”
(Stan Weinstein)
KOLの視点KOL Take
Valuation is an argument about what a stock is worth; a downtrend is a report on what it is fetching. When I am already holding, I let the report govern and leave the argument for the day price agrees with it.
Core Principle
Weinstein’s verb is hold, which aims the rule at a position you already own. That is where the cheap-multiple argument does its damage: it arrives exactly when you need a reason not to sell, and it feels like analysis rather than reluctance. Watch what it does as the trade deteriorates: every further decline lowers the ratio, so the case for holding grows more persuasive precisely as the evidence gets worse. An argument that strengthens while you lose money is not an argument, it is a comfort. Weinstein’s rule removes the entire category from the exit decision. Price is what put you in the position, and price is what is entitled to keep you there.
Trading Application
When you catch yourself defending a losing position with a number that is not price — a multiple, a yield, a book value — treat it as an alert about you rather than an answer about the stock. Write the exit in the same terms as the entry, before you own anything. The takeaway: judge the exit on the evidence you used to enter, or you are not exiting a trade, you are starting a different one.
