The entire value of a stop is that it fixes your worst case while you are still calm enough to think. Widening it under pressure is almost never new analysis — it is the old analysis losing an argument with your P&L. And it rarely happens only once. Each adjustment feels small and defensible in the moment, but the cumulative effect is that the risk you carefully defined no longer has a ceiling. Ryan’s rule is deliberately mechanical because it takes the decision away from you at the exact moment you are least equipped to make it.

Write the stop down before the position exists, and give it one legal direction: toward your entry as the trade works, never away from it. If you catch yourself building a case for more room, treat that case as evidence about your state of mind rather than about the stock. The takeaway: a stop is a ratchet, not a dial.
