Ryan is stating a hierarchy that most traders only discover after a painful drawdown. The instinct
is to chase returns and to prove the thesis correct, but both of those are downstream of one thing:
still having money to trade with. Capital is the raw material of every future opportunity, and a
serious loss doesn’t just hurt today — it shrinks the base you compound from and forces you to win
bigger just to get back to even. Put preservation first and the wins take care of themselves;
invert that order and a single bad stretch can end the game.
