O’Neil is calling out a specific kind of pride. You build a thesis, the broad market turns against it,
and the temptation is to insist you’re right and the market is temporarily wrong. But the general
direction of the market is the tide under every individual position — most stocks move with it, not
against it. Fighting that tide means holding longs while the weight of capital flows the other way,
which is exhausting and expensive. The market doesn’t owe your conviction a payout. When its direction
disagrees with your view, the market is the bigger force, and it gets the final say.
