Position sizing and entry timing are inseparable. At the pivotal point — the moment a stock breaks out of a proper base — your risk is smallest because your stop is closest. This means your position can be largest within your risk budget. As a move extends, the distance to a logical stop widens, forcing you to reduce size to maintain the same dollar risk. The math is unforgiving: a trader who enters 15% into a move with half the size of someone who entered at the pivot will capture less profit even if the stock doubles. Livermore’s insight is not about prediction. It is about recognizing that the beginning of a move offers the best mechanical setup: tight risk, maximum position size, and the full runway of the advance ahead. Calculate your position size from the stop distance, not from a fixed share count. At the pivot, a 5% stop allows a large position. Ten percent above the pivot, that same dollar risk buys far fewer shares. If you missed the beginning, reduce your size or skip the trade entirely. Never chase with full size.
